Softball Hosts Midweek Doubleheader Against Stephen F. Austin

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team is set for its first midweek doubleheader of the season as the Golden Eagles welcome the Ladyjacks of Stephen F. Austin to Hattiesburg. The doubleheader is slated for Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 4:00 p.m.
The first 100 fans to Wednesday's game will receive a Russell Drawstring Bag. Fans can also show their business cards at the gate to purchase a $1 ticket apart of the Worker's Perk Wednesday special.
Southern Miss enters the week with a 5-5 overall record.
In the circle, collectively the Black and Gold has a 2.33 ERA with 28 runs on 59 hits. Jillian Johnson, 1.54 ERA, has only allowed six runs on 14 hits and 13 strikeouts. Kim Crowson, 1.84 ERA has allowed six runs on 18 hits and seven strikeouts.
Stephen F. Austin comes to Hattiesburg with a 2-8 overall record. The Ladyjacks opened the season at the 2017 Mississippi State tournament and played in the Texas A&M Tournament last weekend.
Southern Miss is 93-96 (.492) all-time against current members of the Southland Conference. So far this season the Golden Eagles have played McNeese State dropping a 4-1 single game against the Cowgirls. This past weekend the Black and Gold dropped two games to Nicholls (3-2 and 3-0). Later in the season the Golden Eagles will play a single game at Southeastern Louisiana.
The Ladyjacks are currently leading the Golden Eagles 5-2 all-time with all seven meetings coming in tournament play. The doubleheader will mark the first time the two teams have met on the softball diamond outside of a tournament setting.
The two teams last met in 2007 at the Red & Blue Classic in Oxford, Miss. with Southern Miss recording the 8-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin in the contest. Stephen F. Austin won the first two meetings in series claiming a pair of 5-1 wins at the 1991 and 1992 ULM Tournament. The Golden Eagles took the win, 6-2, in the third meeting of the 1999 ULM Tournament for their first victory in the series. Stephen F. Austin took the next three in 2000 at the Pepsi Intercollegiate Classic and the 2007 Compass Bank Invitational in Waco, Texas.

Scouting the Opposition:
The Ladyjacks come into Hattiesburg after dropping games against Western Kentucky (2x), Mississippi State (2x), and Georgia State in the opening weekend at the Mississippi State Tournament. Stephen F. Austin posted a 5-1 and 3-1 victory over New Mexico State but fell to Texas A&M (2x) and Missouri State last weekend in the Texas A&M Tournament.
