Report: With just four more days until the first game of the season, the Southern Miss football team held a two and half hour practice in full pads Tuesday afternoon at Joe P. Park Practice Facility on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi. The Golden Eagles continued to work on both sides of the ball in preparation for Saturday's nationally televised game against the University of Kentucky.
Quarterback Nick Mullens
On the Kentucky team…
"Great football team. Obviously they have a very physical defense and a pretty experienced secondary with returning all their guys. I know they're confident in their system and you can tell that with the plays made on their film. Inexperienced in their front seven but they're SEC athletes and we're expecting the most from that. They have a great team, great coaches, a very physical defense but at the same time, we're excited to match up with them and see where we stand."
On ways to exploit their defense…
"Obviously it's tough because they run a front where it's tough to run the ball against so it will be interesting to see how we find ways to run the ball but at the same time we just have to stick to what we do best. We know the playmakers we have, we know the stuff that we rep during camp, so for us, it's repping the stuff we've been doing for months now and that's how we're going to have success."
On the new offensive lineman protecting him…
"It's awesome. They're learning a lot and they're willing to learn. The guys up front are a really solid bunch and they're my brothers so we all try and help those guys along with the process and maybe catch up a little bit. They're working their tail off, really trying to be physical football players and athletic lineman like you want. But the biggest thing is chemistry up front and I think we really do have a lot of that."
Offensive Lineman Cameron Tom
On preparation for Kentucky…
"We got the plays down. We got the game plan down, really hammering down the game plan for us. We're trying to get into rhythm out here in practice."
On playing with a new group on the offensive line…
"All those guys will play. It's just getting used to them next to me and them getting used to playing next to me too. The biggest thing for me is to stay calm, make sure they know what to do and make sure we're all on the same page."
