Report: Southern Miss football moved one of its final practices of the spring season up a day to avoid potential inclement weather. The Golden Eagles practiced for three hours in full pads on the Joe P. Park Practice Facility on Wednesday afternoon on a beautiful Hattiesburg spring day. The team ran individual and team drills that focused on fundamentals, while implementing first-year head coach Jay Hopson's new system.
Head Coach Jay Hopson
On last practice before the Black and Gold Game...
"We've had a good spring. It's always good to finish and watch them compete in the stadium to finish things up. We accomplished a lot this spring but we need to continue to grow as a team. Overall, I'm very happy with how spring has gone so far."
On Nick Mullens...
"He's a football player. I can't say that any other way. I have told a lot of guys that I have had the opportunity in the past to be around guys like Byron Leftwich and Chad Pennington. Nick Mullens throws the ball as well as any quarterback that I've ever been around. He is a tremendous football player. He is all that he is advertised to be and more."
On this Golden Eagle team...
"They are a great bunch of kids. They work really hard and they are just a joy to be around. We know what our goals are and what we have to do to get there. We know we have a lot of work to do but that's just football. We have had a great spring but we still have room to grow. We still have a lot of things to work on but that's what spring is all about. We are going to have to correct the mistakes and get better. That's our journey."
Defensive Lineman Dylan Bradley
On the atmosphere Saturday...
"It's always good to go against your own teammates. You see who the dogs are. You get to see who is going to bring it and who is not. I think Saturday is going to be a good outing for us."
