HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss started fast and ended strong as it defeated crosstown foe William Carey 79-60 on Monday night inside Reed Green Coliseum.
The Golden Eagles, who defeated Mississippi College on Thursday night, never trailed.
Southern Miss led 9-3 to start and then went on a 23-6 run that gave it a 32-14 advantage at the final media timeout of the half. Also included in that stretch was a thunderous dunk by Raheem Watts. Bilal Abdur-Rahim scored the first five and seven of the first nine points for the Black and Gold.
The lead stayed in the double-digits before a free-throw at the second half's 13:52 mark put William Carey within 48-39. The teams continued to jockey until the deficit was cut even more on a Leo Garrett jumper with 7:33 to play, making it a 57-49 game. It would be the last single-digit instance of the night, as Southern Miss finished 22-11 the rest of the way.
The Golden Eagles begin their regular season at home Friday against Tougaloo at 7 p.m.
