HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss SAAC has announced that Kelly Erasmus (women's golf) and Elena Roca (women's tennis) have been voted its Student-Athletes of the Week for their recent performances.
Erasmus, a senior, finished in second place in a field of 55 at the Golden Eagle Jam, helping her team to the tournament championship. She tallied 15 birdies, four on her last six holes. One of them came on the 18th hole that was set up by a clutch 15 foot putt to finish the 3rd round at 68 and 4-under par. Her finish of 213 is the 2nd best finish for a 54-hole tourney in school history, and her 3rd round is tied for 2nd lowest round in school history. Erasmus helped her team to tie the school record for lowest round of 289. Her low score, especially the last 5 holes of the 3rd round, was key to helping the team walk away with a one stroke win. The Cape Town, South Africa, native was also named C-USA Golfer of the Week. She had rounds of 70, 75 and 68.
The Golden Eagles look to build off their outstanding success in Hattiesburg and carry it to the FIU Pete Bradley Invitational (Sunday-Tuesday) in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
Roca became an ITA Regional champion in both finals of singles and doubles action at the ITA Southern Regional Championships host by Alabama. The junior from Barcelona, Spain, defeated Adrianna Beltrame of Samford (6-2, 6-2) and Ioana Popescu of ULM in the B-Main draw finals (6-4, 6-3). She team with TJ Jerse to win the B-Doubles Main draw 8-3 against Iryna Vardanian & Judit Castillo of Northwestern State.
The women's tennis team's fall season is over, but it ended on a high note.
