HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss football team will host Marshall on Saturday at 6 p.m. for its annual HOMECOMING game. As that date approaches, we take a look back on the 10 most memorable HOMECOMING games in Golden Eagle history.
Oct. 3, 1981 -- The Golden Eagles rolled up a (then) school-record 630 yards of total offense in a 52-9 rout of Texas-Arlington. The win raised USM's record to 4-0. Quarterback Reggie Collier put on one of the greatest individual performances in Eagle history as he rushed for 186 yards on just six carries and threw an additional 112 yards. Collier's great night began on the second play of the game when he went around left end for 80 yards and a touchdown. Later in the first half he went around right end for 84 yards and another score. In the second half Collier teamed with split end Don Horn on a 62-yard scoring pass play. The "Nasty Bunch" defense limited the Mavericks to 229 total yards.
Southern Miss finished 9-2-1 and played Missouri in the Tangerine Bowl. It was head coach Bobby Collins' last year at the school.
