Report: Southern Miss football continued preparation for Nebraska on Wednesday afternoon at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility. The team worked out for two and a half hours in full pads, simulating game situations, working on ball security and practicing special teams. In addition, the team ran 7-on-7 drills as well as working with individual position groups.
Head Coach Todd Monken
Do you think the players handled the noise simulation at practice well today?
"We had it the same way last week so our guys are doing fine. The way we communicate on the field is mostly non-verbal so it was good. Our energy was good. It is always good when you can feel our guys and hear our guys above the noise. When you can do that then you know you have had a spirited practice. If their voices, the whistles and the sounds of the pads are getting over the noise then you know you aren't having the practice you want."
What are some offensive and defensive strengths of Nebraska?
"Offensively, their strength is their system and I like who they have in the system. The quarterback can run around and he can throw it. The receivers are good route runners and they have some guys up front that can move you. The coaches have really done a good job. They are balanced just look at the way they can run it and throw it effectively. Defensively, they are big. I mean you can tell they are a Big 10 football team. Up front their linebackers and defensive line are big. Their secondary is long. I think their overall strength is that they are a physical football team on both sides of the ball. We are going to have to be prepared to strap it up."
Defensive Lineman Darian Yancey
On how the defensive line is going and it's coming together...
"As a defensive line, we are all like brothers. We joke around and have fun on the field and I feel like I wouldn't want to be anywhere else besides here with these guys. I know these guys and we hang out outside of football. We help each other if anyone needs anything. They teach me and I teach them."
