HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's basketball team hosted its preseason Hardwood Club Tip-Off party on Thursday night at Brewsky's in Hattiesburg. The event allowed members of the Hardwood Club a chance to meet and greet the 2015-16 Golden Eagles.
"It is exciting because it is the first time that our fans get a chance to meet some of the guys that they have read about or heard about that are new in the program," head coach Doc Sadler said. "At the same time as coaches, it lets you know that the season is right around the corner so let's get excited and be ready to start."
The Hardwood Club is the booster club for the Southern Miss men's basketball team. Membership in the Hardwood Club gives the Golden Eagles the resources to compete with other programs in Conference USA.
In the past year, donations from the Hardwood Club have aided in the renovations of the men's basketball locker room. In addition, funds generated from the Hardwood Club go towards the M.K. Turk Scholarship Endowment.
"There is not anything more important than the Hardwood Club," Sadler added. "Without them, we couldn't do it. We are very fortunate to have an active Hardwood Club. They have done so much for us within the year that I have been here. They have remodeled our locker room. They have put us on even terms in recruiting with other teams in our conference."
There will be various Hardwood Club functions throughout the season, including pregame socials featuring Sadler. For more information about the Hardwood Club, please contact the basketball office at (601) 266-6355.
"The biggest thing is to come and support the team," noted Sadler. "Not everyone can be a member, but if they can, we definitely appreciate it. There are things that we do that is a little extra for our Hardwood Club members. At the same time, we welcome all fans. Anybody that wants to be a part of our program, we want them to be a part of it.
"The bottom line is you are a big, big part of any success that we have. I want you all to know that it is appreciated and doesn't go unrecognized."
The Southern Miss basketball team opens up the 2015-16 season with an exhibition game against Millsaps on Thursday, Nov. 5 at Reed Green Coliseum.
