Report: Southern Miss football once again took the field with shoulder pads and helmets for a two-hour workout on Friday morning. The offense and defense matched up against each other in 7-on-7 drills as well as several team periods. The Golden Eagles also worked on game day situations as well as special teams in various periods.
Offensive Coordinator Chip Lindsey
On the look of this team...
"Every team is different. 2015 is different than 2014. We are just trying to figure out what this team's identity will be and what we can do well and just try to do it as many times as we can. That's what we are going to do for the next four or five days through next week before we even start trying to think about our first game."
On the younger players...
"All those guys have shown flashes in the first four days. I think they have all improved. Korey (Robertson), Jordan (Mitchell) and Patrick (Brooks) have all been here and are coming into their own. It's good to see those guys out there improving every day. I think the more reps they get the better they will get. We need to continue to push those guys because they're going to have to help us at some point. You can never have enough guys. Depth is so important and that's something we are trying to build. Those guys are going to need to be ready to go."
What has stood out to you the most about your offense?
"We've got guys that have been around a little bit. The continuity is coming together. We sprinkled in some new guys. As a whole, the biggest thing that has stuck out to me is our guys. The effort is there; the pace is there. They are processing things a little faster. Obviously, when you add a wrinkle or two it slows you down, but overall I have been pleased with the offense and the way we've gotten after it. We just have to do the little things better."
Running Back Justice Hayes
How does getting reps with more guys help you get a feel of the offense?
"You get a feel of the offense. All of us get reps with the ones and twos, so we really get a feel for everybody. Everybody can be comfortable with each other and I like the scheme of how we run that."
Linebacker Terrick Wright
On goals as a senior...
"We are trying to change the culture right now; go back to what we know, like the Nasty Bunch. We want to be aggressive offensively and defensively."
Next Game: vs. Mississippi State (9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, Fox Sports 1)
