Football Practice Report: August 5

Report: Southern Miss football took the field for its second practice of fall camp on Wednesday morning. The Golden Eagles had a spirited workout for two and a half hours in the summer heat and humidity. For the second straight day, the 10-period practice included three team sessions and several group sessions. The team did one-on-one drills and seven-on-seven skill drills, as well as focusing on special teams.
Head Coach Todd Monken:
On the intensity Day 2...
"We have depth, which means you have competition. Our guys will have to compete every day to play. We have the right guys who understand that. I think a lot of things have changed starting with the weight room and me. Just the way we approach every day and I feel good about where we are heading. It's the best I have felt in the three years that I've been here."
On the quarterback race...
"Both of them did some good things and both of them did some poor things, but you don't know until you look at the film. Nick and Tyler did some good things and our young guys did some good things too. We've got to be able to take care of the ball. Today there were too many times when we didn't. We ended up with a couple of careless interceptions and we aren't going to do that. It's proven that doesn't work."
Defensive Back D'Nerius Antoine:
On moving to defensive back from linebacker... "Everything has been good. I kind of did want to play linebacker but I am going to do whatever they ask. If coach asks me to play linebacker I'll play linebacker. If he asks me to play safety I'll play safety."
Tight End Taylor Marini:
What are some things you need to work on going into this season? "I'd say verbal leadership. I'm quiet when I get on the field and I need to be able to communicate more. Also, just getting through this Mississippi heat because it's hot out here."

The event is sponsored by Pearl River Valley Electric Power Association and TheFirst. Monken will speak on the progress of fall camp as well as the 2015 season.
