Football Practice Report: August 21

Report: Southern Miss football returned to the Joe P. Park Practice Facility Friday afternoon as they practiced under overcast skies and temperatures in the lower 80s at the start of practice. A light rain fell over the final 20 minutes of the workout. The team worked out for over two hours, going 10 periods running both team and individual drills in anticipation of its second scrimmage of the fall.
Head Coach Todd Monken
On whether it was a regular work day or do you focus on anything for the scrimmage on Saturday… "It was a normal workday as we went in shoulder pads, because we have a scrimmage tomorrow. We took out about 15 minutes (of the practice) but we didn't do anything special."
On what he wants to see out his team's second scrimmage…
"It is the second chance that we have to evaluate players and what we can expect come game day. It is really important that everybody has to continue to improve, especially the guys that we are hoping to continue their upward climb. And we will get to see that tomorrow night."
Junior Center Cameron Tom
On this being his second-year playing center, after never playing the position before…
"I definitely feel more comfortable about all the techniques. I'm learning to recognize blitzes. The reason I don't have to concern myself with the techniques is because now it's all coming natural to me just like it was at tackle."
On does the rain make you take a different approach when you are at center…
"It doesn't really bother me. It's actually good practice for when it rains in a game. Wet ball drills and other things like that are really helpful."
Next Game: vs. Mississippi State (9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, Fox Sports 1)

The ticket office will also be open tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m., until 2 p.m., and fans can walk-in for ticket purchase or order over the phone. The ticket office is normally open weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
