HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky named today the 14 recipients of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Awards, including Cole Weeks of Southern Miss.
This is the seventh year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008. The conference annually awards the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarships to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
Weeks was a two-year letterman as the quarterback for the Southern Miss football team. A sport coaching education major with a physical education minor, Weeks merited a spot on the President's List and was a four-time member of the AD Honor Roll. He served two years as a member of the Team Unity Council and earned the team's Player of the Week honor following his game against Louisiana Tech.
Weeks, who hails from Freeport, Florida, plans to continue his studies at Southern Miss in the master's program for sport management and will hold the position of offensive graduate assistant for the Golden Eagles in 2015.
