HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A sold out crowd at the Giannini Touchdown Terrace last Saturday morning received a chance to hear and interact with five Southern Miss football greats at the second annual Champions Brunch.
The event, which was part of Eagle Fest 2015, featured former Golden Eagle head coach Bobby Collins, along with quarterback Lee Roberts, wide receiver Sherrod Gideon, running back Damion Fletcher and lineman Demar Dotson.
Collins tallied a 48-30-2 record over seven seasons from 1975-81, capturing two nine-win and one eight-win season. As for Roberts, he lettered for the Golden Eagles from 1995-98 and threw for 6,289 yards and 52 touchdowns over his four seasons, which included two Conference USA championships.
Gideon lettered for Southern Miss from 1996-99 and ranks as the all-time leader in receptions (193), receiving yards (3,214) and touchdown catches (30) over his career. Fletcher finished his Golden Eagle career as the school's all-time rusher with 5,302 yards and the most prolific scorer on the ground at the school with 44 touchdowns. He is one of a select few in NCAA history to rush for at least 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons.
Dotson, who played just one season of football on the defensive side and also two years on the Golden Eagle basketball team, is the only still active player on the docket for this event, as he recently finished his sixth season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the offensive line.
The five Golden Eagle greats shared their special memories from their days at Southern Miss as well as telling the audience about how what Southern Miss meant to each of them today.
An initial question and answer session was held with the Voice of the Golden Eagles, John Cox, followed by questions from the crowd and fans then got a chance to mingle with the group in an event in which fun was had by all involved.
