HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team finished its fourth week of spring practice at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium under overcast skies and a couple of light sprinkles here Sunday afternoon.
Despite the conditions, the Golden Eagles continued to prepare for next Saturday's annual Black and Gold Spring game as well as the 2015 season, which opens Sept. 5 at home against Mississippi State. The spring game is set for 1 p.m., and there will be free admission to the game.
For third-year coach Todd Monken, the Golden Eagles have two more workouts before next Saturday's spring game.
"The biggest thing we need to clean up is to make sure that no matter what we have put in, both offensively and defensively, that we covered a lot of the adjustments and the checks," said Monken.
The practice also gave the Golden Eagles an opportunity to work on things that they don't normally do, but are still important aspects of the game that needs to be covered during the spring.
"Today we worked on the defense coming over to offense to work on ball security," said Monken. "The offense went over to defense to work on tackling and recovering fumbles, some of the things that you need to cover in the last few days and cover certain situations that come up in a game."
With six days left before the annual spring game, Monken went on to say that the competition at all positions have been better in his three springs here.
"It has been good," said Monken of the competition. "We have gotten a few guys banged up, just like everybody else, but it has been good. Since I have been here, this is the most depth that we have had in terms of competition. The most important thing is to recruit talent and players feel like that they have to compete to get a chance to play. We just have to continue to recruit better and coach better to keep getting those results."
The Golden Eagles return to the practice fields Tuesday afternoon.
