HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team participated in a two-hour workout on Thursday afternoon at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium. The Golden Eagles moved practice up to 3:15 p.m. in an attempt to avoid inclement weather expected late in the day in the Hattiesburg area.
"We definitely wanted to get (practice) in," head coach Todd Monken said after practice. "We flipped the practice. We went out early and made sure we got all the team stuff done. It worked out good. The weather held off."
Once again, Monken was pleased with the attitude and effort given by his team.
"I think our effort has been better consistently on both sides of the ball," Monken stated. "I think we have played more physical. We will see on Saturday though. It will be practice seven and the culmination of where we are at."
The Golden Eagles return to The Rock on Saturday as the team participates in its first scrimmage of the spring. The scrimmage will consist of situational team drills, including two-minute, goal line and red zone situations. In addition, Monken said that the ball will be placed at different places on the field to give the team different looks.
When asked, Monken said that he anticipates about 40 plays for both the ones and the twos with the threes getting about 10-20 reps in the hour and a half scrimmage.
The Golden Eagles open their 2015 season at home on Sept. 5, against in-state foe Mississippi State.
