HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team returns to action on Wednesday night as the Golden Eagles travel to Mobile, Ala. for a midweek game against South Alabama at Jaguar Field.
Live stats, live streaming ($) and in-game tweets (@SouthernMissSB) will be available throughout the game.
Southern Miss (15-10) will look to return to the win column after dropping a three-game series on the road to Conference USA foe North Texas. The Golden Eagles are 4-0 this season in midweek games, but have not played a midweek game on the road this season. The Black and Gold have outscored their opponents 32-11 in midweek games this season.
South Alabama is 17-6 overall, including an 8-4 record at home. The Jaguars split a weather-shortened series with ULM over the weekend.
Southern Miss enters the week ranked nationally in the top 100 in a handful of categories. The Golden Eagles rank 44th in the NCAA in batting average as a team and 62nd overall in scoring. In addition, the Black and Gold rank No. 73 in triples per game and 87th in win-loss percentage.
The Jaguars hold an 8-3-1 all-time record against the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss is just 2-5 all-time against South Alabama in Mobile.
The two teams started the series back in 2007 and have played nearly every year since. The two teams split the home-and-home series in 2007 with each team winning on their respective field. The Jaguars won all three games played in 2008. In 2009, the two teams played to a 6-6 draw at the Southern Miss Mizuno Classic in Hattiesburg and the Golden Eagles claimed the rematch in Mobile. The Jaguars won the only game played between the two teams in 2010 and the teams split in 2011. In 2012 - the last time the two teams played each other - South Alabama won both games of a home-and-home series.
Scouting the Opposition:
South Alabama is the top vote getter outside of the top 25, dropping out of the rankings for the first time this season this week. The Jaguars were ranked No. 24 in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN/USA Softball Collegiate polls.
