Men's Basketball Begins Road Trip at Old Dominion

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss looks for its second consecutive victory this Thursday, February 19, when it travels to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT and will be televised by the American Sports Network.
Southern Miss and Old Dominion will meet for just the eighth time in their history and second time as conference foes. The Monarchs won the first six meetings, but the Black and Gold won last year, 75-60, in Norfolk. In games played in Norfolk, ODU holds a 3-1 advantage. This will be head coach Doc Sadler's first-ever game against Old Dominion.
Southern Miss enters tonight's game with a 7-17 record, including 2-11 in Conference USA. The Black and Gold is looking for its second straight victory after defeating Florida Atlantic last Saturday, 62-54, to snap a five-game losing streak.
Guard Chip Armelin is seventh in Conference USA with 15.8 points. He is also second in the league in minutes played (34.9) and seventh in three-pointers made (2.1), while grabbing 4.3 rebounds.
Forward Matt Bingaya is second on the team with 14.5 points while also pulling down a team-high 5.8 rebounds. Forward Norville Carey is averaging 11.1 points and 5.7 rebounds. He is fifth in the league in field goal percentage, hitting 57.7% from the floor.
The Golden Eagles are scoring just 61.1 points a game but are allowing 68.5. Southern Miss is connecting on 43.9% from the floor and 34.3% from three while allowing 45.7% from the field and 37.8% from beyond the arc. The Black and Gold is also being outrebounded, 33.0-to-29.7.
Southern Miss head coach Doc Sadler is in his first season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. He has compiled a 156-124 (.557) record in nine years as a head coach.
Old Dominion enters tonight's game with an 18-6 record and is 7-5 in Conference USA. The Monarchs have lost two straight after falling at UTEP last Saturday, 62-47.
Guard Trey Freeman is fourth in Conference USA in scoring, averaging 16.0 points per game. He is also ninth in assists (3.3). Guard Aaron Bacote is second on the team with 10.8 points. He also leads the league in free throw percentage, connecting on 86.2%.
Center Jonathan Arledge is scoring 9.2 points. Forward Richard Ross is averaging 7.9 points. He is fourth in C-USA in field goal percentage (.581) and sixth in blocked shots (1.5).
Old Dominion is averaging 65.1 points per game while allowing a league-low 58.1. The Monarchs are connecting on 42.5% from the floor and 32.4% from three, while allowing 40.9% from the field, including a league-low 31.5% from beyond the arc. ODU is pulling down 36.2 rebounds per game, while allowing 31.1, which is second in Conference USA.
