Men's Basketball Closes Homestand Versus Florida Atlantic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss closes its two-game homestand this Saturday, February 14, when it hosts Florida Atlantic. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
Southern Miss and Florida Atlantic will meet for just the second time in their history. The Golden Eagles won the first meeting last year, 66-49, in Boca Raton. This will be head coach Doc Sadler's first-ever game facing Florida Atlantic.
Southern Miss enters tonight's game with a 6-15 record, including 1-9 in Conference USA. The Black and Gold have dropped 12 of its last 13 after falling at Middle Tennessee on Thursday, 61-51.
Southern Miss enters tonight's game with a 6-17 record, including 1-11 in Conference USA. The Black and Gold have dropped 14 of its last 15, including five straight, after falling in overtime, 73-71, to FIU on Thursday.
Guard Chip Armelin is ninth in Conference USA with 15.7 points. He is also second in the league in minutes played (34.7) and sixth in three-pointers made (2.1), while grabbing 4.2 rebounds.
Forward Matt Bingaya is second on the team with 14.5 points while also pulling down a team-high 5.9 rebounds. Forward Norville Carey is averaging 10.9 points and 5.3 rebounds. He is fourth in the league in field goal percentage, hitting 58.4% from the floor.
The Golden Eagles are scoring just 61.1 points a game but are allowing 69.2. Southern Miss is connecting on 43.8% from the floor and 34.3% from three while allowing 46.1% from the field and 38.2% from beyond the arc. The Black and Gold is also being outrebounded, 33.0-to-29.6.
Southern Miss head coach Doc Sadler is in his first season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. He has compiled a 155-124 (.556) record in nine years as a head coach.
Florida Atlantic enters tonight's game with an 8-14 record and is 1-10 in Conference USA. The Owls have lost six straight and 10 of 11 after falling at Louisiana Tech on Thursday, 65-54.
Guard Marquan Botley is leading the team in scoring, averaging 13.2 points per game. He is fifth in the league in free throw percentage (.805), seventh in minutes (33.2) and eighth in assists (3.5). Guard Solomon Poole is second on the team with 12.9.
Guard Jackson Trapp is scoring 11.5 points per game while sitting in third in C-USA in three-point field goal percentage (.427), fourth in minutes (34.3) and eighth in three-pointers per game (2.0). Forward Kelvin Penn is fifth in blocks (1.6) and seventh in rebounding (7.0) and guard Justin Massey is eighth in three-point field goal percentage (.392).
Florida Atlantic is averaging 62.4 points per game while allowing just 65.0. The Owls are connecting on 40.7% from the floor and 33.9% from three, while allowing 44.3% from the field, including a league-low 25.8% from beyond the arc. FIU is pulling down 32.3 rebounds per game, while allowing 36.1. The Panthers are also third in the conference in blocks per game, averaging 4.4.
