Getting to Know... Norville Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- As the countdown for the season-opener approaches, a Southern Miss men's basketball player will be featured each day in preparation for the 2015-16 season. The Golden Eagles open the season on the road against former Conference USA rival Memphis on Saturday, Nov. 14.
With six days until tipoff for the regular season, senior forward Norville Carey is featured.
Carey is a player who has continued to get better with each passing year.
As a freshman, Carey averaged 4.2 points and 2.2 rebounds in limited action. He connected on 51.8-percent from the field. Carey had eight points, six rebounds and three blocks in first career game against Western Kentucky, while scoring six points and had five rebounds against UC-Irvine. The forward had 13 points and six rebounds against Liberty and registered three steals at Arizona. Carey had a season-high two assists at Louisiana Tech. He scored eight points at Georgia State and 12 points at Morehead State while recording season-highs in field goals made (5), steals (3) and minutes (25). Carey recorded first career double-double with career-high of 14 points and 12 rebounds against Dillard.
As a sophomore, Carey played in 26 games, averaging 1.9 points and 1.3 rebounds. He scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds at DePaul and had six points and two steals versus St. Catharine. Carey scored seven points against Coppin State and a season-high eight points on 4-of-5 shooting versus Tulane. He grabbed a season-high five rebounds against UTEP.
During his junior campaign, Carey played 27 games, starting 16. He averaged 10.8 points and was second on the team with 5.6 rebounds per game. Carey was eighth in Conference USA in field goal percentage, connecting on 54.6% from the field. He led the team in rebounding 13 times and scoring three times. Carey recorded 16 double figure scoring games and registered three double-doubles. Carey had a season-high three blocks against William Carey, while adding 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks versus South Alabama. The British Virgin Islands native scored 17 points and had a team-high five rebounds at Alabama. He threw down the game-winning steal and dunk with five seconds left against Troy. Carey posted a team-high 16 points and six rebounds at Drexel and scored 10 points and had five rebounds versus North Dakota State. The post player scored six points and had 10 rebounds at Georgia State and notched 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting at UTSA. Carey had 12 points against Middle Tennessee, while scoring 14 points and grabbing a game-high seven rebounds versus UAB. He tallied 15 points at Rice and recorded his second career double-double at North Texas, scoring a career-high 18 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Carey scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Marshall. He had 16 points and six rebounds while setting career-highs of five steals and 36 minutes versus WKU. Carey scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds at Middle Tennessee and added 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds against Florida Atlantic. Carey scored a team-high 17 points with three blocks versus UTEP.
In high school, Carey played at Red Lion Christian Academy> he was named Second Team All-State by ESPNHS.com and also named All-State Honorable Mention by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association. Carey was the fifth-ranked player in Delaware by MaxPreps.com. He led RLCA to a 19-4 record and a runner-up finish in the state tournament as a senior. Carey averaged 19.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. As a junior, he averaged 13.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.7 blocks, leading the team to a 20-4 record. He participated in the 2011 CBC Championships, averaging 7.3 points and 2.3 rebounds.
Off the court, Carey is majoring in sociology.
