Getting to Know... Michael Ramey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" As the countdown for the season-opener approaches, a Southern Miss men's basketball player will be featured each day in preparation for the 2015-16 season. The Golden Eagles open the season on the road against former Conference USA rival Memphis on Saturday, Nov. 14.
With four days until tipoff for the regular season, redshirt junior guard Michael Ramey is featured.
Ramey transferred to Southern Miss directly from Seminole State College in Oklahoma, but the Indianapolis, Ind. native began his collegiate career at Ball State.
As a true freshman at Ball State during the 2012-13 season, Ramey played in 10 of Ball State's first 11 games before suffering an illness in December and missing the remainder of the season. He earned a medical hardship waiver to preserve his year of eligibility. While at Ball State, the shooting guard made his collegiate debut with 15 minutes off the bench Nov. 11 against Grambling. Ramey tallied 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers in a span of 75 seconds to help Ball State to a win over Wofford, while scoring 10 points versus Holy Cross (Ind.).
Following a year at Ball State, Ramey transferred to Miami Dade College. He played in 16 games, making five starts. Ramey tallied 191 points on 65-of-170 (.382) shooting, including 51 three-pointers made and a 39.5 clip from behind the arc. In addition, he pulled down 30 rebounds with 18 assists and 15 steals.
Ramey conclude his junior college career at Seminole State College. While at SSC, he led the NJCAA in three point percentage (59.3%). He played in 26 games, making 24 starts on the year. Ramey recorded 355 points on 130-for-233 (.558) shooting, averaging 13.7 points per game. He went 67-for-113 (.593) from behind the arc. In addition, he grabbed 71 rebounds, while adding 70 assists and 23 steals.
In high school, Ramey played three years at Southport High School after spending his freshman year at Perry Meridian High School. He was ranked as one of the top-25 shooters in the country for the Class of 2012 by ESPN.com. Ramey was a four-time All-Conference Indiana selection and three-time All-Marion County choice, while being named Honorable Mention All-State as a senior. The Indianapolis native averaged 17.2 points per game for his high school career, scoring more than 1,000 career points at Southport HS. He set the Southport records for single-season free throw percentage (.890), single-game 3-pointers made (9) and most consecutive free throws made (27), while leading the state of Indiana in 3-point shooting as a junior, connecting on 52.4 percent (66-of-126). He averaged a career-best 19.5 points per game as a junior and ranked 40th in the state with 410 points. Ramey was selected for the Indiana North-South All-Star Game and the Hoosiers' Reunion All-Star Classic as a senior. He played AAU basketball throughout his high school years for SYF Players (Indiana), Meanstreets (Illinois), Indiana Elite and Southern Select (Georgia).
Off the court, Ramey was an honor student in high school and is currently majoring in business at Southern Miss.
