HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Former Southern Miss defensive lineman Jamie Collins (McCall Creek, Miss.) will be playing in his first Super Bowl, Sunday, Feb. 1, when the New England Patriots meet the Seattle Seahawks at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
Collins, starting at linebacker for the Patriots, registered a team-high four tackles (three solos) to go along with an interception for 25 yards, a quarterback hit and a pass defended in the Patriots 45-7 rout of Indianapolis in the American Football Conference championship game last Sunday to reach the title game.
Collins, who played for the Golden Eagles from 2009-12, led the Patriots during the regular season in tackles with 109 to go along with four sacks in his second year with the organization.
He added two interceptions, four forced fumbles and two recoveries during the regular season for the Patriots that are now 14-4 this season. Collins becomes the 13th former Golden Eagle to appear on a team roster for the Super Bowl.
It is the third time in the last four years, a former Southern Miss player has appeared on a Super Bowl roster as Michael Boley (XLVI) played for the New York Giants in 2012 and Chris Clark (XLVIII) saw action for the Denver Broncos last season.
Punter Jerrel Wilson was the first Golden Eagle to play in the big game for the Kansas City Chiefs, appearing in Super Bowl I.
The other former Golden Eagles to play in the Super Bowl include Bud Brown, Brett Favre, Ray Guy, Bobby Hamilton, Jeremy Parquet, Todd Pinkston, Etric Pruitt, Adalius Thomas and Sammy Winder.
Five of those players, Favre, Guy, Hamilton, Wilson and Winder, have played in multiple Super Bowls. Guy and Winder each played in three Super Bowls marking the most appearances by a former Southern Miss player. Golden Eagle alumni have compiled a 9-10 record in the contest.
Super Bowl XLIX is slated to kickoff at 5:30 p.m., CT.
