Football Hosts Rice on Ray Guy Day

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team kicks off Conference USA play at home against defending champion Rice on Saturday evening at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium. Game time between the Golden Eagles and Owls is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised by Fox College Sports, as well as heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
It will be Ray Guy Day at The Rock this Saturday and several different festivities are planned around the game, starting at noon through 2:00 p.m., with a Guy meet and greet at the Ogletree Alumni House. It is open to all fans (only one autograph item per person, please).
Guy will then ride in Eagle Walk at 4 p.m., and later be recognized in a special halftime presentation during the game against the Owls. In addition, the first 10,000 fans at the game will receive a commemorative poster and wall clings honoring Guy, which is courtesy of BancorpSouth.
During the game, there will be a swim program reunion as Southern Miss athletics will recognize members of the swimming program during the game.

In addition, Southern Miss and Rice is also part of Parent and Family Weekend, which is open to all students and their families. In preparation for Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, the football game will serve as the Breast Cancer Awareness Game. Pink ribbons will be passed out at the gates as a sign of support for breast cancer awareness. Also, pink golf carts will lead the Eagle Walk.

The Southern Miss football program captured its second-straight home victory and third triumph in its last five games with a 21-20 win over Appalachian State on Saturday night. It was the first time Southern Miss won back-to-back home games since capturing seven-straight home triumphs that stretched during 2010-11 seasons.
Since the start of the 1976 season, following the renovation of Roberts Stadium, the Golden Eagles have posted a 132-55 (.706) record at The Rock. The squad last went undefeated at home, 6-0, during the 2009 and 2011 campaigns.
The Golden Eagles open their 19th season of Conference USA play this week when they entertain Rice. Southern Miss has posted an all-time 84-49 record in C-USA games and has more championships in the history of the league in football with five.
Southern Miss is 13-5 in league openers and 7-3 when they open the league slate at home. This is the third season in a row the Golden Eagles have opened league play at home. Southern Miss is 43-23 in C-USA games played at home.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two schools in football with Rice holding a 3-1 advantage in a series that dates back to the 2007 season. The Golden Eagles are 1-1 against the Owls in Hattiesburg, dropping the initial meeting 31-29 in 2007. The Black and Gold posted a 48-24 victory over the Owls the last time the two teams met in The Rock in 2011.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools as both West Division members of C-USA.
