HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The skies threatened early during the Southern Miss practice here Wednesday afternoon, but it turned out to be another gorgeous fall day for the Golden Eagles who continued to get ready for their Conference USA showdown this weekend at UTEP.
The team went through its normal two and a half hour Wednesday practice in shorts and shoulder pads at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
Following practice, second-year coach Todd Monken said that there was no change in the status of sophomore quarterback Nick Mullens, who left early with a hurt right foot in last week's game against Louisiana Tech.
"It wasn't as bad as we thought," said Monken, whose starting quarterback got re-evaluated earlier in the day. "He wasn't able to go today. We will see tomorrow. We'll see if we can heal him up a bit and get him going this weekend."
Monken added that if Mullens cannot go, he has total confidence in redshirt senior Cole Weeks and his backup, redshirt freshman Parker Adamson.
"Cole had a good day today and Parker has gotten a lot better," said Monken. "You only get better with reps and some confidence. We will be fine. We just have to play well around Cole and I know that we will."
Despite a possible change in quarterback, Monken does not see any difference in the way the receivers gelling together with Weeks, as they have with Mullens.
"For a lot of last year, there was a competition (at the quarterback position) and even through the summer," said Monken of Weeks, who was in the middle of that competition. "Cole is one of our leaders. He is throwing fine and I don't think there is a big deal from our players' perspective."
The Golden Eagles return to the practice fields Thursday afternoon, before hitting the road for the Lone Star state on Friday.
Southern Miss and the Miners will kick off at 7 p.m., CT from the Sun Bowl, where the Golden Eagles have won their last two games there. The game can be seen on Fox College Sports as well as be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
