Football Set for Blackout Game with LA Tech

In addition to the Blackout Game, the game will serve as Football Lettermen Day at The Rock. All former football players, equipment managers, athletic trainers, cheerleaders and mascots that earned a letter, as well as former football coaches, are invited back for this event. There will be a tailgate on Pride Field from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. All Lettermen in attendance will take part in a special on-field recognition at halftime of the game.
Southern Miss enters the weekend on the heels of a 30-20 road victory over North Texas. The win improved the Golden Eagles to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in Conference USA play. Louisiana Tech enters the game with a 4-3 overall record and a perfect 3-0 mark in league play. The Bulldogs currently lead the C-USA West Division.
Southern Miss has posted at least 500 yards of total offense in each of its last two games - Middle Tennessee (537) and North Texas (506). Southern Miss rushed for over 200 yards for the second time this season against the Mean Green. The Golden Eagles improved to 3-0 this season when they have held their opponent scoreless in the first quarter. Southern Miss finished the North Texas contest with a season-best 37:11 time of possession.
Southern Miss looks to win their third home game of 2014 when they entertain Louisiana Tech this weekend. The Golden Eagles renew the third longest series in their history this week when they take on LA Tech. The two schools have played 45 times with the Golden Eagles holding a 31-14 record in the series. Since the start of the 1976 season, following the renovation of Roberts Stadium, the Golden Eagles have posted a 132-56 (.702) record at The Rock.
The Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles last fall with a 36-13 win in Ruston in the first meeting between the two schools as members of Conference USA. Southern Miss has won seven of the last nine meetings between the two schools and is 16-6 all-time against the Bulldogs in Hattiesburg. The two schools played each year from 1946 until 1972. The series was renewed in 2010 after going through an 18-year hiatus. After a year off in 2012, LA Tech became a member of Conference USA for the 2013 season.
The Golden Eagles have several ties to the Bulldogs on the Southern Miss football staff. Head coach Todd Monken was an assistant coach at LA Tech in 2000-01, overseeing running backs as well as the recruiting coordinator in 2000 and the wide receiver coach in 2001. Assistant coach John Simon (running backs) was a four-year starter for the Bulldogs, leading LA Tech to a WAC Championship and a bowl appearance. Simon generated 4,852 all-purpose yards. In addition, Director of Operations John Carr lettered two years at LA Tech.
Last week, Quarterback Nick Mullens threw two touchdown passes and placekicker Corey Acosta kicked three field goals to lead the Golden Eagles to a road win. With the game tied at 20, Mullens hit Casey Martin on a 19-yard TD pass late in the third quarter and Acosta added a 38-yard field goal in the fourth. Mullens was 27 of 41 for 305 yards, with two interceptions and a 40-yard TD pass to Michael Thomas.
George Payne scored on a 5-yard run and the Golden Eagles outgained North Texas 509-395. Junior Jalen Richard, in his first game since the season opener at Mississippi State, collected a career-best eight receptions for 71 yards. True freshman Ito Smith finished the game with 95 yards on the ground to lead the rushing attack.
