HATTIESBURG, Miss. - For the second consecutive day, Southern Miss returned to the practice field to work on fundamentals while also getting in some controlled scrimmage action in a shortened workout schedule here Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles' practice lasted an hour, 40 minutes at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility and before going through its situational scrimmage, the squad utilized a physical inside run drill, as well as going through one-on-one wide receivers versus defensive backs drills. In addition, Southern Miss worked on a fast-paced offensive scheme which in turn helped the defense during the workout.
"It was very intense and short," said Johnson of the practice. "We are going to do that again tomorrow and probably hold off concentrating on East Carolina until Sunday."
This week also has given a few of the younger players a chance to try and help their stock as the Golden Eagles return to action next weekend, Sept. 15, at home against East Carolina.
"This (time) will also give us a chance to work with a couple of guys that are in that gray area in being able to help us on the field on game day or are not quite ready," said Johnson. "So it will be an important week for them."
Southern Miss returns to the practice field on Thursday afternoon.
