HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss returned to the Joe P. Park Practice Facility on Wednesday as they worked to prepare for Saturday's non-conference opponent, Western Kentucky, in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Golden Eagles and Hilltoppers kick off at 6 p.m. from Houchen Industries - L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Ky., on Saturday. The game can be viewed via the online ESPN3.com network and heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
As Wednesday is the media's day to speak with the defensive unit, how the team is preparing for the Hilltoppers unique offensive scheme was one of the main points of discussion following the two-hour session.
"It used to be where if you were going to see some of the spread formation, you had to make a big adjustment," said coach Ellis Johnson. "But, now you see the shotgun every week and they do a lot of pro type stuff with a lot of I-formation, two-back type stuff. They are a very physical offense."
Southern Miss has not yet named a starter for Saturday's game, and Johnson explained the staff's decision-making process the game preparation comes to a close.
"What we're doing is working through the game plan through the week and giving them all some reps," Johnson noted. "Whoever looks (the most polished) when we get through tomorrow will get the call. We're going to try to pull whoever is ready to go and looks the cleanest on the plan."
