HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team opens a new era when it kicks off its 2012 football season, Saturday, at nationally ranked Nebraska in a 2:30 p.m., contest.
The game will be televised in most of the country on ABC, except for the Atlantic states, which will get the contest on ESPN 2. Fans can also listen to the game on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network along the gulf coast.
The Ellis Johnson era officially gets underway as he becomes the 19th head coach to lead the program.
For Johnson, his first game will not be an easy one as he takes to the road to face a Cornhusker squad that ranks No. 16 in the USA Today and No. 17 in the Associated Press polls. The Huskers finished 9-4 last season in their first year in the Big 10, but dropped a 30-13 decision to South Carolina in the Capitol One Bowl last January.
The game will also mark the first contest for a new Golden Eagle starting quarterback, Chris Campbell, a Collierville, Tenn., native who will get the call when Southern Miss gets the ball. It will be the redshirt junior's first action as a collegian. He missed much of last season with an injury.
The season opener for the Golden Eagles marks the third trip to Lincoln for the program since the series began during the 1999 campaign. Southern Miss, which trails in the series 2-1, won the last meeting at Memorial Stadium over the Huskers, on Sept. 11, 2004. Southern Miss took advantage of five NU turnovers that day to capture a 21-17 decision.
Southern Miss is 63-31 in season openers - there is no result from the 1916 opener against Poplarville HS - and have won four of their last five season openers including a 19-17 decision at home last season against Louisiana Tech.
Following the Nebraska contest, the Golden Eagles will enjoy their bye week and then open their home schedule Sept 15 against East Carolina in what had been call the "Fill To The Top" game. Kickoff for that contest is 2:30 p.m.
