HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss split into their scout team and travel squad groupings for the first time on Thursday as they worked for just over two hours at the Joe P. Park Practice facility.
It was the first day of on-field preparations for their season opener at Nebraska on Sept. 1 and coach Ellis Johnson came away with an early impression for where his team stands.
"We got a little Nebraska in today and got the scout team organized," said Johnson. "The rest [of practice] was just a normal practice, mixture of first and third downs, different situations, red zone and continuing to mix and rotate players. I think tomorrow will be the same thing."
As fall camp wore on, the routine of going against one another fell into place and Johnson and his staff have noticed it on the practice field.
"I think we're tired of going against each other," Johnson said. "[The players] know each other's calls. Every time we check a play on offense, the defense knows what we're running. Every time the defense checks, the offense knows what they are doing. They are tired of looking at each other."
The team will practice again on Friday afternoon before having Saturday off to get ready to prepare full steam for Nebraska on Sunday.
