HATTIESBURG, Miss. - With less than two weeks remaining until their Sept. 1 season opener at Nebraska, Southern Miss worked for two and a half hours on game situations inside Roberts Stadium on Wednesday.
In just helmets, the Golden Eagles walked through countless game situations including offensive and defensive drives and special teams situations.
"We just worked on game day today," said first year coach Ellis Johnson. "We went through our pre-game routine with warm ups and all. I'm not sure it didn't help the coaches more than the players just to make sure we are all on the same page."
Johnson and his staff split into their sideline and pressbox groups and wore headsets, just as they plan to do in a live game scenario. Everything was handled like an actual game down to the kickoff situations and down and distances.
"We created a lot of crazy substitution situations with injured players, sudden change with turnovers, scores on defense, scores in the kicking game, and all those types of things," added Johnson. "I think we got few things done that alerted players to situations in the game and gave us a chance as coaches to work off the same sideline
The Golden Eagles also started classes today but the coaching staff was pleased with the amount of work they were able to get in with the group.
