HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A day after being doused by the Hattiesburg Fire Department, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles return to practice in shoulder pads on Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
The Golden Eagles worked for over two hours through individual and team situations as they prepare for a September 1 season opener at Nebraska.
"We couldn't go full speed today [in just shoulder pads,]" said coach Ellis Johnson. "I'm sure we'll have plenty of things that we need to correct on film. Overall, from the beginning of practice to the end of practice and what we got out of it and the intensity level of the players and pushing through the heat and practicing hard and all those things, I thought it was as good a day as we've had."
With some extra rest after yesterday's shortened session, Johnson was able to see the return of one of the quarterbacks competing to replace four-year starter Austin Davis, Chris Campbell.
Campbell, who sat out earlier in the week as a precautionary measure, drew some praise from the first-year head coach as he directed the first-team offense.
"Chris bruised that shoulder, so I don't know if he's back to normal, but he's back practicing full speed," noted Johnson. "He did some great things in his decision making but he had just a few passes getting out late."
Southern Miss hits the practice field again on Friday morning and will have their second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday.
