HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Golden Eagles worked for just over two hours in full pads in their seventh practice of the spring season inside the Joe P. Park Practice Facility on Wednesday.
For the Golden Eagles, it was much of the same as they become more acclimated to the tendencies and expectations of their new coaching staff and head coach Ellis Johnson.
"Today, we installed short yardage and goal line (packages)," said Johnson. "(The coaching staff) accommodated each other. We put the packages in and got a lot of good physical work in."
In the final portions of the practices, the staff let the squad go live - and allowed tackling - to get a better feel for their understanding of the day's concepts and Johnson noted that he still sees areas to improve in even with as much as the team accomplished.
"There were some hot spots, but it wasn't good and consistent," Johnson said. "The tempo dropped. Execution dropped on both sides of the ball. I didn't think tackling was particularly sharp. A lot of things just got sloppy and that's not good no matter what situation you're in."
The Golden Eagles will continue practicing up to their NCAA-mandated limit ahead of the April 14 Spring Game, a part of the Eagle Fest 2012 weekend - a celebration of the Black and Gold in Hattiesburg.
