HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Beautiful weather remained in Hattiesburg on Wednesday as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles continued to install their gameplan for Saturday's Conference USA opener at Marshall.
The Golden Eagles are 3-0 at Marshall and 5-1 all-time against the Thundering Herd (0-1). In their 2010 matchup, Southern Miss took away a 41-16 victory in Hattiesburg.
Coach Larry Fedora was pleased with the effort he got out of his team in the two-hour practice session and was happy to see a feeling of determination from the squad.
"We had some good intensity out there today," said Fedora. "We had some guys that obviously see the sense of urgency because we're about to go on the road for a conference game. It was a good day."
For the Golden Eagles, this week's opponent has proven troublesome to scout as their season opener was cut short due to weather. And with a new quarterback, Fedora noted some similarities to last week's opener in "The Rock."
"The things they did last year, they aren't doing this year," Fedora said of his scouting of Marshall. "I'm sure they've tailored it to the quarterback so what we have to go off of is what they showed in the first game. It's almost like it's another first game. There's a lot of `what if's' and unknowns. We'll have to be football players, adjust and go from there."
The team will return to the practice field tomorrow afternoon to continue installing their gameplan for the week.
This week's game can be viewed on CSS (Comcast channel 25 in Hattiesburg). The game also will be carried on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network with the "Voice of the Golden Eagles" John Cox and analyst Vic Purvis describing all the action.
Single-game and season tickets are still available for the remaining five games on the 2011 Golden Eagle football schedule by going online at SouthernMiss.com, calling the USM Athletic Ticket Office at 800-844-TICK (8425) or visiting the Pat Ferlise Center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m., until 5 p.m.
