USM leads 5-1 (last meeting, USM, 41-16, 10/2/10)
Golden Eagles Open Up C-USA Play
- Southern Miss opens its 16th season as a member of Conference USA when they travel to Marshall this weekend.
- The program is 13-2 in C-USA openers, having won the last two years to start league play.
- This is the eighth time Southern Miss has opened league play on the road and are 6-1 in those contests.
- This will be the third time Southern Miss has begun C-USA action with Marshall as the two teams have split the two previous games.
- Southern Miss is 77-32 overall and 37-18 on the road in C-USA games.
The Marshall Series
- This will be the seventh meeting between the two schools with the Golden Eagles holding a 5-1 advantage in the series (see page 5 of the game notes to see breakdown of the series).
- The Golden Eagles are 3-0 against The Herd in Huntington.
- Southern Miss has had no trouble scoring points in the series, averaging 32.8 points per game, including its high-point total in a 42-7 victory over MU on Nov. 25, 2006.
- Three of the six meetings have been decided by seven or fewer points.
Notes from the Opener
- Despite inclement weather for most of the day due to Tropical Storm Lee, the Golden Eagles and Louisiana Tech were able to get their season opener in last Saturday, with USM taking a 19-17 decision.
- It was the second consecutive year that the two teams played a tight contest as last year's contest in Ruston was decided by one point (13-12 on Sept. 25).
- Southern Miss improved to 7-0 in season openers against Lousiana Tech as it was the first time the Buildogs were able to score against the Golden Eagles in seven games. USM had outscored Louisiana Tech 84-0 in the previous season openers.
- The Golden Eagles improved to 17-1 at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium when they open the season at home.
