Golden Eagles Step Out of Conference Play
- Southern Miss plays the fi rst of two road non-conference tilts this week when they meet Virginia.
- USM is 2-4 on the road against non-conference foes under Larry Fedora.
- Southern Miss is also 10-7 overall against non-conference foes in the Fedora era.
- This will be the fi fth BCS automatic qualifying conference school that Southern Miss has met on the road under Fedora and Southern Miss is still looking for its fiirst win having dropped games at Auburn (2008), Kansas (2009), Louisville (2009) and South Carolina (2010). The Golden Eagles have beaten UVA (2009) and Kansas (2010) at home during his tenure.
- Southern Miss is 18-23-1 against the current teams from The Atlantic Coast Conference, including an 8-13-1 mark against Florida State, 5-5 against NC State, 4-5 against Virginia Tech and 1-0 against Virginia.
The Virginia Series
- This will be just the second meeting between the two schools with Southern Miss rallying from a 17-point halftime defi cit on Sept. 19, 2009, to capture the lone contest 37-34 in Hattiesburg.
- It was one of fi ve games Southern Miss has won against a BCS automatic qualifying opponent in seven tries at home since 2001. The only losses have come against Nebraska (2003) and California (2004) during that time.
- The 17-point 2nd half comeback is tied for the fourth largest rally in school history.
Notes from Southeastern Louisiana
- Southern Miss limited SLU to 51 yards rushing as it was the second time this season the Golden Eagles have limited its opponent to under 100 yards on the ground. USM is now 17-1 when they hold their opponents to under 100 yards on the ground in the Fedora era.
- Redshirt freshman Jamal Woodyard enjoyed a solid game as he rushed for 99 yards and a TD on the ground, while also catching three passes for 43 yards and a receiving score. The touchdowns were the fi rst two of Woodyard's career.
- True Freshman tight end Collin Jarbo also caught his fi rst pass of the season - a 17-yard TD pass from Austin Davis.
