HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A day after classes began at the University, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles were back on the field at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility to begin preparations for their season opener on Sept. 3 against Louisiana Tech.
Offensive coordinator Blake Anderson addressed the media following practice, as fourth-year coach Larry Fedora was attending a speaking engagement, and was pleased with the effort and ability of the team to work through some early mistakes as they begin planning for the Bulldogs.
"We had a good practice considering it was the first day that we put in the scout team and there was some confusion as usual," said Anderson. "We got all the reps in that we needed to with time to spare and that's usually a good sign for the first day."
With the scout team in place, Anderson's offensive unit began to prepare for an opponent that limited the Golden Eagles to just 13 points in their 2010 matchup in Ruston, La. For Anderson, the Bulldogs are expected to bring a similar brand of up-tempo, hard hitting football to Hattiesburg in just under two weeks.
"They always play hard. We watched the film from the last game today and their effort level and tempo is really good. You've got to win the one-on-one battles," Anderson noted of the Bulldogs. "They beat us in a lot of one-on-one battles last year, especially outside, so we've got to win those if they are going to play that win. You've got to anticipate it and guys have to win."
The team will return to the practice field Friday afternoon for their second day of preparation for the Bulldogs.
