HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Coming off their first two-a-day practice last week, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles showed signs of fatigue but broke the mold on Wednesday at the Joe P. Park Practice facility and showed coach Larry Fedora how they wanted to respond after their second two-a-day of the season. On Tuesday, the Golden Eagles worked through two practices but came out Wednesday with an energy that pleased the fourth-year head coach.
"(The energy level) was much better today than last week when we did this," said Fedora. "We challenged them last night in the meeting and the seniors stepped up and we had a good workout this morning. We got a lot of situations in, a four-minute situation, a two minute situation; we got a lot of stuff done in the red zone today. So, there were some good things getting accomplished."
Fedora said the team worked on numerous end game scenarios to ready themselves for the 2011 campaign, and he was excited for the opportunity to show some of his newcomers what it is like in a late game, pressure packed situation.
"There are guys that are getting opportunity to make a play, at the last play of the game, in the four minute to try and keep that clock going or to get the ball back," Fedora noted. "Then, we turn around and go into the (two minute drill) and guys are getting an opportunity to see what it's like. Those are situations that will come up in every game we play. We've got to be locked in on that."
The Golden Eagles will go through team workouts and meetings for the remainder of the day and return to the practice field Thursday morning.
