Golden Eagles Go Through First Scrimmage of Preseason

"Today they came out here with an attitude," said Fedora. "They came out here with a chip on their shoulder. They knew they didn't do what they needed to do yesterday in a full practice, and today they get after it. They were flying around and having fun out there."
Fedora was pleased with the play of his team but was hesitant to shower too much praise after just the first scrimmage of camp.
"We had too many balls on the ground. When we look on the film, we will see some guys that were not going full speed and won't realize it until a coach points it out and everyone pays for it," said Fedora, in his fourth season with the program. "There were a lot of good things, individually, too many for me to remember. But, there were a lot of things that weren't good so it was something to build off."
Kendrick Hardy led all rushers with 62 yards on seven carries including a long touchdown run of nearly 60 yards. Desmond Johnson added 52 yards on 10 carries while quarterback Arsenio Favor picked up 50 yards on 11 carries.
Through the air, Austin Davis was 17-of-28 for 180 yards with two touchdowns while Favor racked up 139 yards with two touchdowns and an interception on an 11-for-20 day.
True freshman Chris Briggs had the biggest day for the receivers, bringing down five balls for 61 yards and a touchdown while Ryan Balentine and Dominque Sullivan each had 57 yards.
Defensively, Terrance Pope and Korey Williams both had a pair of tackles for loss and Furious Bradley snatched the Favor interception.
Southern Miss opens its regular season, Sat., Sept. 3, when they entertain Louisiana Tech at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
