HATTIESBURG, Miss. - In order to improve the fan experience at each home football game for the 2011 season, Southern Miss has announced its themes for each home contest beginning with its Sat., Sept. 3 opener against Louisiana Tech.
For the home opener, Southern Miss will recognize all first responders in conjunction with the presentation of beams from the World Trade Center attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to honor their service and mark the 10-year anniversary of the attacks. All first responders will be offered a buy one, get one free ticket promotion for the game.
On Sept. 17, the Golden Eagles will host Southeastern Louisiana for the "Hall of Fame Game," where both of Southern Miss' national championship teams (1958 and 1962) will be inducted into the Southern Miss Legends Club. All junior and community college faculty, staff and students will also be able to purchase tickets for just $5. "The Pride of Mississippi" will also host their annual "All-South Band Day" for regional high school bands.
When the Rice Owls come to town on Oct. 1, Southern Miss asks all fans of the Black and Gold to don their black attire for the "BLACKOUT Game." The game will also mark "USM Parent's Day," a celebration of those responsible for sending their children to Southern Miss where they will receive a special ticket discount.
Homecoming is scheduled for Oct. 22 when the Mustangs of SMU come to Hattiesburg. The theme for the 2011 event is, "Give Me that Black and Gold!" Also to celebrate homecoming, the "Take a Kid to the Game," ticket promotion will be in effect where fans can bring one kid age 12 and under to the game for free with every adult price ticket purchased. Former Dixie Darlings will also be invited back and can get a $24 lower deck ticket price. Three former Southern Miss greats - Bucky McElroy, Hugh Laurin Pepper and Bubba Phillips - will also be inducted into the Legends Club.
UCF comes calling on Nov. 12 and the Golden Eagles will be ready as they give a "Salute to America," to all members, past and present, of the U.S. Armed Forces. Former Southern Miss star and Super Bowl champion Adalius Thomas will be inducted into the Legends Club.
The annual "Black and Blue Bowl" will take place on Nov. 26 against the Memphis Tigers. Southern Miss faculty members will be able to purchase two tickets for the price of one for this game. Mississippi youth football teams are also invited to the game and can purchase a ticket for $5.
"Military Monday" will also go into effect on Monday, Aug. 15. Under this promotion, anyone with a military I.D. will be able to purchase a ticket for $5 to any Southern Miss football home game on Monday's only.
Numerous other promotions and events are also in the works as Southern Miss works to make the 2011 season one of the most exciting in Golden Eagle history.
