HATTIESBURG, Miss. - With the NBA lockout preventing teams from signing undrafted free agents, former Southern Miss standout Gary Flowers has signed a professional contract with the Eisbaren Bremerhaven professional basketball team of the German Beko Basketball League, which was announced last Friday by the team. The one-year contract runs through the 2011-12 season.
"I'm still surprised that we were able to get a player like Gary Flowers to Bremerhaven," said head coach Doug Spradley. "With his potential, he has what it takes to eventually play in the NBA, especially on the offensive end. Gary is very sharp, has an excellent cast, and incredibly long arms. He can quickly switch from defense to attack mode due to his versatility. He can be used in positions three, four and five."
Flowers played two years (2009-11) with the Golden Eagles, where he finished seventh in school history with a 16.8 scoring average. The two-time All-Conference USA player also finished his career seventh in blocks with 104, and is just one of 16 Golden Eagles to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, as he ended with 1,078 points and 513 boards.
The Dallas, Texas native also took home numerous awards. This past year, he was the first Golden Eagle in C-USA history to earn first team All-Conference honors. He was also First Team All-NABC All-District, and became the first Southern Miss player to earn the Cellular South Bailey Howell Trophy.
