Statement from Greg Heiar, who resigned effective Friday, May 6, 2011 to become an Assistant Basketball Coach at Wichita State University.
"The last two years at Southern Miss have been the best of my life. I appreciate Dr. Saunders, Richard Giannini and Larry Eustachy for giving me the opportunity to coach at Southern Miss. The decision was very difficult to leave and was based on the fact that Wichita State is a basketball school (no football), has a great fan following, the team flies to away games on a charter, it's much closer to our home in Iowa and the familiarity with their staff. It has been great learning under the direction of a National Coach of the Year in Coach Eustachy and now I will have the opportunity to learn from another great coach, Gregg Marshall. I am uniting with old friends as Wichita State assistant coach Chris Janus was my community college coach and I was his assistant at Chipola Junior College. Later Dana Ford, the other assistant coach, was my assistant when I became the head coach at Chipola. My family and I are very grateful for the many friends we developed in Hattiesburg and we thank them for their support."
