HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior forward Gary Flowers has been named 2011 recipient of the Cellular South Howell Trophy, awarded to the top collegiate basketball player in Mississippi.
Flowers becomes the first Southern Miss player to earn the award.
Former Southern Miss legend and NBA great Clarence Weatherspoon accepted the award on behalf of Flowers, who was in El Paso, Texas for the 2011 Conference USA Tournament.
"Gary has been outstanding," said Weatherspoon. "If you want to win, you need a go-getter. Gary fits in that role."
Flowers leads the Golden Eagles with 19.0 points and 7.8 rebounds, good for third and sixth in the league, respectively. He is also fifth in C-USA in blocks with 1.5 and ninth in field goal percentage (476). Earlier this year, Flowers became the fourth fastest, and 35th player overall, to score 1,000 points.
The Dallas, Texas native has scored in double-figures in 28 of 29 games, including 26 straight to end the year. He scored 20-plus points in 13 games, including a career-high 32 against East Carolina on February 19. He also has eight double-doubles on the year, fourth most in Conference USA.
Flowers beat out Ole Miss' Chris Warren and Dee Bost of Mississippi State for the award.
