HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team began its third week of spring football drills here Monday afternoon in a two and a half hour workout at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
It was the first time the team returned to the practice field since going through its first full scrimmage last Friday afternoon at Biloxi High School.
Southern Miss fourth-year coach Larry Fedora was worried about how his team would perform after the long Friday scrimmage, but that concern was unwarranted as the Golden Eagle mentor praised his team's effort during the practice.
"We had a great day today actually," said Fedora of the team's eighth spring practice. "The intensity level was really good. I was a little worried about it after the scrimmage, because we had quite a few plays. I wasn't sure how many guys would be worn down and beat up.
"But, they regrouped and got after it today. They moved around well, so I was happy with that."
As players continue to fight for positions for the fall, one Golden Eagle continues to learn a new one after transitioning into a new role in the fall. Rising sophomore Dominique Sullivan continues to show improvement at the wide receiver spot after coming to school last fall as a quarterback.
"He's been playing the position since August," Fedora said of Sullivan's move to receiver. "That was the first time in his life. Every day he gets better and better. He's getting stronger and put on some weight (during the winter). He really made some nice plays the other day (in the scrimmage). He made a couple plays close to the end zone and some really nice plays outside. He's proven that he has the ability to do it all over the field."
Sullivan and the rest of the Golden Eagles return to the practice field Wednesday for an afternoon working then travel to Pearl, Friday, for its second full scrimmage of the spring. The Golden Eagles will scrimmage at Pearl High School beginning at 5:30 p.m.
