HATTIESBURG, Miss. - For the first time this spring, the Southern Miss football team went on the road, traveling to Biloxi to hold a two-hour scrimmage at Biloxi High School.
Head coach Larry Fedora would have like to see more from his offense. But was happy in how the defense held up.
"Offensively, in the red zone, we have to finish," said Fedora. "We didn't do that. We had to kick too many field goals. On the other side of it, defensively, we did some really nice things in the red zone, which we needed a lot of improvement in that area. So I was pleased to see that."
The coaches will now go back and look at the film before getting ready for the second half of spring practice.
"The main thing that we wanted out of this is to play with great effort," Fedora added. "That's the thing we'll look at the hardest. Then we'll look at the missed assignments on both sides of the ball. Then it will be about technique and individual play. But if we see great effort and don't see missed assignments, then we're in pretty good shape."
The Golden Eagles ran 115 plays in the controlled scrimmage. Senior Austin Davis connected on 17-of-24 passing for 205 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt freshman Arsenio Favor was 6-of-9 passing for 87 yards and three touchdowns.
Redshirt freshman Jamal Woodyard rushed 10 times for 146 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Jeremy Hester ran for 74 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Senior Ryan Balentine caught four passes for 95 yards, including a 64 yard touchdown, and sophomore Dominique Sullivan caught six passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns.
The Golden Eagles will return to practice this Monday as they work toward the annual Spring Game on April 9.
