HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team worked out for the sixth time this spring practice Wednesday afternoon at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
Head coach Larry Fedora was encouraged by what he is seeing so far out of the defense.
"I was really pleased with the defense and the progress they made today," said Fedora. "They really did some nice things out there today. That's two days in a row for them to show up and make some plays, so I'm pleased at where they are at this point."
Fedora, however, is looking to get more out of the offense.
"There weren't any balls on the ground today, but we still didn't execute the way we need to," added Fedora. "We're not playing at the tempo that we need to play at, so we still have a ways to go."
According to Fedora, the upcoming scrimmage this Friday is going to show a lot about where the team is at right now.
"This is a big scrimmage," Fedora said. "It's going to be situational, but we're going to get after it. I want these guys to approach it like a game. We're going to have eight plays with that group and then it's off the field.
Fedora thinks that the traveling scrimmages are showing an impact both on and off the field.
"I think they've been great," added Fedora. "Our fans on the coast love it, and our fans in Jackson love it. We get to come down there and they get a taste of spring ball. If not, they would have to travel up here. So I think it's a great thing for them. Our players enjoy it, especially having people in the stands. So it's a good deal that we have."
