HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss moved up one spot in one poll and made its season debut in the other major college football poll with their release on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (8-1 overall, 4-1 in C-USA East) moved up a place to No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, while making their first appearance in the Associated Press Top 25 in 2011 with a No. 25 ranking.
The AP ranking is the first for the school since Nov. 2004.
Southern Miss' rise in the rankings is due to a seven-game winning streak and the school's best start since the 1996 season. The Golden Eagles captured a 48-28 decision at East Carolina on Saturday as they won for the 16th time in 19 meetings against the Pirates in Greenville, N.C.
The Golden Eagles return home this week when they play host to C-USA East rival UCF (4-5, 2-3). Game time is set for 7 p.m., CT at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium. Tickets can be purchased online at SouthernMiss.com, by phone at 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or in person by visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Center (West 4th and Golden Eagle Drive), Monday through Friday from 8 a.m., until 5 p.m.
