HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Fresh off a 31-13 road victory at UTEP, the Southern Miss football team moved up a place in one poll and stayed steady in trying to enter the rankings in another on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles, which are off to their best start since the 1996 season with a 7-1 overall record and 3-1 in Conference USA play, moved up to No. 24 in the USA Today/Coaches poll, after entering the rankings with a No. 25 position the previous week.
Southern Miss remained the second-highest point receiver of teams that did not reach the Top 25 in the Associated Press poll. They garnered 19 more points this week by collecting 68 and trail only Texas (99 points) from getting into the Top 25.
The winners of their last six games, the Golden Eagles return to action this week when they travel to East Carolina for a 3 p.m., CT contest, Saturday.
