Notes Heading into the UTEP Game
- The Golden Eagles head into the contest ranked No. 25 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. It is the first time Southern Miss has been ranked in a national poll since Nov. 2, 2004. The Golden Eagles were ranked No. 21 by both USA Today/ESPN and the Associated Press in that ranking.
- Southern Miss has won five straight games - the longest winning streak since capturing eight straight over the final five games of the 2008 season and the first three games of the 2009 campaign.
- By limiting SMU to three points last Saturday, the Golden Eagles have not surrendered a touchdown in two games this season - the other coming against Southeastern Louisiana. It was also the fewest points surrendered since a 52-0 victory on Alcorn State on Sept. 5, 2009.
- The three points surrendered to SMU were the fewest allowed by Southern Miss in a C-USA game since beating East Carolina 21-3 on Nov. 15, 2008, in Hattiesburg.
- Southern Miss is 79-33 all-time in Conference USA games and 38-18 on the road.
- With the win over SMU, Southern Miss became bowl eligible for the 18th consecutive season.
- The Golden Eagles had a string of scoring in 18-straight quarters snapped in the second quarter against SMU.
- Southern Miss is averaging 44.0 points per game over the last five contests.
The UTEP Series
- The two schools have met four times on the gridiron with each team winning twice. The Golden Eagles won the C-USA series opener, 56-30, in the first game at the Sun Bowl in 2007 and USM dropped a 40-37 contest in double overtime at Roberts Stadium the following season (for a breakdown of the entire series please go to page five of the notes).
- The Golden Eagles will be making their fourth trip to the Sun Bowl, holding a 1-2 mark there. USM dropped the 1952 and 1953 postseason games there, losing to Pacific 26-7 (1/1/53), and UTEP, 37-14 (1/1/54).
- The 37-14 loss in the 1953 Sun Bowl was the first meeting between the two schools and the second meeting came in a bowl game as well with the Golden Eagles defeating the Miners 38-18 in the 1988 Independence Bowl. Punter returner James Henry returned punts of 65 and 45 yards for touchdowns in that contest.
