HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Fresh off garnering its first Top 25 ranking in seven seasons, the No. 25 Southern Miss Golden Eagles (6-1, 2-1 C-USA) worked through their Tuesday practice session at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
The Golden Eagles, who were tabbed No. 25 in this week's edition of the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, showed coach Larry Fedora that nothing has changed in their preparation for this week's opponent.
"Good practice (today)," said Fedora. "Guys were moving around and come out here with the right attitude. (It was) just like we've been doing every Tuesday. I like it that way."
The upbeat attitude of practice was no surprise after Fedora and many of the Golden Eagles downplayed the ranking during Monday's press conference.
"It's good to be recognized for what you've accomplished at this point," Fedora on Monday. "But at the same time, you have to understand that there are a lot of people who have been in the Top 25 that aren't there anymore. So, it's nice to be recognized but we still have a lot of work to do."
Fedora's squad will face an opponent in UTEP (4-3, 1-2 C-USA) that has shown explosiveness running the football.
"They are a physical team," added Fedora. "They are running the ball a bunch, shifting and motioning and I think they have found an identity now with their football team. They are going to pound it at you."
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT in the Sun Bowl in El Paso. The game will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network (Ch. 393 HD/793 on Comcast, 152 on Dish Network and 613 on DirecTV).
