HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss began their installation practices on a blustery Tuesday evening at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility as they look toward Saturday's homecoming matchup with Conference USA rival SMU.
The reigning C-USA West Division champions are riding a five-game winning streak behind a solid offense that has shown they can succeed in multiple areas.
"Everyone thinks all they do is throw the football," said coach Larry Fedora. "But they can run the football. I've been really impressed with them. Up front on the offensive line and at running back, they are tremendous."
Fedora has been pleased with the energy of the team as they come off their open week after being able to rest and recharge their batteries.
"We've had great energy so far. These guys know what it takes to accomplish our goals," added Fedora. "Sunday was a good practice and today they came out and matched that energy level."
For next Saturday's Homecoming contest against the SMU Mustangs, the Southern Miss Athletic Department is encouraging fans to "Pack the Rock" for the most exciting home date yet in the 2011 season.
Tickets still remain for purchase for this weekend's homecoming game as the 5-1 Southern Miss football team entertains SMU in a key interdivisional C-USA game at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
Southern Miss is also partnering with the NCAA in their "Take a Kid to the Game" program which encourages adults to take children to an NCAA football game. Children aged 12 and under can receive a free ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket to the game. Fans can take advantage of this offer by contacting the Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-844-TICK, ordering online at SouthernMiss.com and using the promo code "TAKEAKID" or by purchasing tickets in person at the Ferlise Center or on game day at the ticket office.
