HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard C. Giannini announced Thursday that the Golden Eagle football team will play a home-and-home series with the Naval Academy beginning next fall.
The Golden Eagles and Midshipmen are slated to play Oct. 8, 2011, at Jack Stephens Field at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Navy then makes a return trip to Hattiesburg at a yet to be determined later date.
The addition of Navy to the schedule completes the 2011 non-conference schedule and pushes back one previously scheduled contest, LSU, to a later year.
"We are pleased to start a series with Navy next season," Giannini said. "The game will allow our fans a great opportunity to tour the Washington area and enjoy the traditions of Annapolis and the Naval Academy. We also feel moving the LSU game to the first game of the 2016 season will benefit our schedule that year."
The Golden Eagles start the 2011 season at home against Louisiana Tech (Sept. 3), and play host to Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 17 - moving the game up three weeks from the previously announced date - before traveling to Virginia (Sept. 24) and Navy to complete the non-conference part of the ledger.
The LSU game has been set for Sept. 3, 2016.
Southern Miss and Navy have never previous faced each other in football.
